Professional has announced the Third quarter results of
the 1999 Wedding and Portrait Awards. Six Distinctions
were awarded by the judges including first timers Tina
Luke in the Portrait Location category and Phil
Garlington in the Wedding Category.
A delighted Tina says: "I've been Commended before but never got this far and it will certainly impress my clients. The shot is of a typical three-year-old girl doing her own thing. I found the perfect cornfield for her height, and I shot it lying down on the ground and used Fujifilm's 800 NHG film." The judges included award winning photographers Stephen Swain and George Dawber and bride-to-be Denise Kearney of Fujifilm Digital Imaging. Stephen says the judging was tough: The Wedding Distinctions really stood out and they were strong images, but overall I felt that some of the entrants weren't quite sure what to do. "They seemed to be caught between the two styles of traditional and new approach and in too many cases it ended up being neither. This is the first time I have judged such a prestigious competition and it was certainly an education." George Dawber was also a little disappointed at the overall standard of Portrait entries but he believes that many of them are on the right track: "People are at last recognising that there is a big demand for a new type of portrait, for instance there was a lot of black and white and some of the images were very emotive. I am all for experimenting, but technically some of them fell a little short of what we have come to expect in the Fujifilm Wedding and Portrait Awards.
