Episode 51

It has been non-stop wedding action ever since I touched down last week in Detroit City. Not only am I completely absorbed in trying to sort out all the final details, it is as if the entire world is obsessed with weddings. It is like going on a diet. The minute you try to stop eating anything tasty, all you see on television are adverts for cookies and cakes.

The month for drowning wedding apparitions would normally be June, but everywhere I go it is all about weddings. Billboards on the expressway have brides and grooms cuddling. People are getting married on every television show I watch, every film I see. Even logging into my email to send this entry the mailserver homepage was featuring an article about marriage myths. Yes, the anticipation is focusing my attention on this media barrage. So be it. I am excited.

Gareth arrives next week during which we will have to rush to finish a lot of last minute details and hopefully squeeze in a bit of fun as well. Right now it seems like we will be spending a lot more time on blue or purple, chicken or steak, than film or sightsee. Laugh all you want but there are actually things of interest to see in Detroit. Remember Motown was here. Canada's a short jaunt over the river. We have loads of good restaurants and even some clubs. Okay, now I am just sounding like the Detroit tourist board. My point was that hopefully I will be able to pull myself away a bit especially when all my friends from London come here.

Tomorrow alone I will be getting my shower dress hemmed, picking out thank you cards, buying the glass of which we will drink wine out of during the ceremony and then smash - a Jewish tradition from my side of the wedding - seeing the cake maker, going over the seating arrangements, and calling about the hotels, my wedding dress, and all my bridesmaids about my hen night. Normally I might exaggerate for comic effect but why lie when the truth is so unbelievable. Wish me luck.
